Baptism Communion & Confirmation
What is it? In Matthew 28:19, Jesus says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” At Baptism, you are washed with water and sealed with the sign of the cross. The water is an outward sign of God’s grace – that God loves us. In Baptism, God delivers us from the Sin that holds us back from loving God and one another.
As the sign of the cross is made on our foreheads, we are reminded that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit – that the Holy Spirit is working within us all. In the Lutheran church, we often baptize individuals when they are first born, but you can be baptized at any age, making you a member of the congregation. During a Baptism service, the congregation is asked to participate. They give a promise to help support the one being baptized as they Grow their faith and explore who God is. It is a one-time event that lasts a lifetime.

Each week, we gather for worship and receive communion. As we worship God together, we also confess to our brokenness and hear words of forgiveness. A piece of that is also receiving bread and wine, hearing the words, “The body of Christ given for you; the blood of Christ shed for you.” They are words filled with grace, reminding us that we are all beloved children of God. Our hearts are renewed and set free to serve God in the world.
During our services, you may be served communion by an adult or a child. We encourage all to receive Communion, so you may notice young children receiving Communion as well. Every so often, we hold a communion class for all of our Sunday school children where we bake bread together and share about what receiving Communion means to each of us. We always encourage kids and adults to ask questions about it, but this is a special time set aside for them. After the class is finished, we use the bread the kids baked during worship services, which is a special connection for them to know that they participated in helping to create this important experience.
In 7th and 8th grade, youth are encouraged to participate in Confirmation ministry. During this time, youth have a chance to explore the meaning of worship, their Baptism, and what faith has to do with their life! It helps further engage our youth in Christian community by building relationships and finding ways they can be God’s hands and feet in the world.
At the end of their 8th grade year, each student has the choice of participating in a public affirmation of baptism amidst the congregation. Our youth each have voices and opinions to share. Through Confirmation we hope they are encouraged to use their voices
Current Confirmation Classes are through the Organic Youth Program, which is open to all Lutheran congregations in Western NY. Classes are on the 3rd Sundays of the month, and include worship, dinner, group-building, and of course, Bible study.
Contact the office if you are an adult interested in Confirmation classes or if you would like to bring your youth to Confirmation classes.
